Non invasive neuromodulation of the vestibular cortex: a new treatment for cybersickness and fear of heights
Abstract
People who get carsick, seasick or airsick are experiencing motion sickness. The condition causes cold sweats, nausea and vomit. Women and children are more prone to motion sickness, but it can affect anyone. A new condition may be related in the next future to autonomous driving-sickness. Cyber-sickness is a type of motion sickness that shows up in people who use screens and virtual reality devices, causing nausea, sweating, dizziness, headache, and eye strain. Symptoms of cybersickness can be relieved by taking frequent breaks from screens, reducing screen time in general, and ensuring that your virtual reality headset fits properly.
At the present time, no effective treatment has been developed for motion sickness and cyber sickness. At the University of Siena, recently, a new protocol with transcranial alternating currents, a non-invasive technique for brain modulation, has been demonstrated to be potentially efficacious in preventing motion sickness.
